سورة البقرة هي سورة مدنية نزلت على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في المدينة المنورة، وقيل إنها أول سورة نزلت على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في المدينة المنورة، نزلت أول آيات سورة البقرة في أول الهجرة حتى السنة العاشرة من الهجرة، وقيل إن آية (وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّـهِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ) هي آخر آية نزلت على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلمي وم النحر، وعدد آياتها مائتان وستٍ وثمانون آيةً.
ومن فضل سورة البقرة أنها تبعد الشيطان، وتحفظ النفس من وساوس الشيطان، كما أن من فضائل سورة البقرة أنها تحصن البيت من دخول الشيطان والجان، قال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم: (لا تَجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ مَقابِرَ، إنَّ الشَّيْطانَ يَنْفِرُ مِنَ البَيْتِ الذي تُقْرَأُ فيه سُورَةُ البَقَرَةِ)، كما أن من فضل سورة البقرة أنها تجلب البركة والرزق.

ثبت عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم أن سورة البقرة تشفع لصاحبها يوم القيامة قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: (يؤْتَى بالقُرْآنِ يَومَ القِيامَةِ وأَهْلِهِ الَّذِينَ كانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ به تَقْدُمُهُ سُورَةُ البَقَرَةِ، وآلُ عِمْرانَ، وضَرَبَ لهما رَسولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلَّمَ ثَلاثَةَ أمْثالٍ ما نَسِيتُهُنَّ بَعْدُ، قالَ: كَأنَّهُما غَمامَتانِ، أوْ ظُلَّتانِ سَوْداوانِ بيْنَهُما شَرْقٌ، أوْ كَأنَّهُما حِزْقانِ مِن طَيْرٍ صَوافَّ، تُحاجَّانِ عن صاحِبِهِما).

آية الكرسي من آيات سورة البقرة، وآية الكرسي لها فضل عظيم على من يحرص على قرائتها بشكل يومي قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: (مَنْ قَرَأَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ لَمْ يَمْنَعْهُ مِنْ دُخُولِ الْجَنَّةِ، إِلا الْمَوْتُ). روي عن قراءة آية الكرسي في صحيح مسلم: (يا أبا المُنْذِرِ، أتَدْرِي أيُّ آيَةٍ مِن كِتابِ اللهِ معكَ أعْظَمُ؟ قالَ: قُلتُ: اللَّهُ ورَسولُهُ أعْلَمُ. قالَ: يا أبا المُنْذِرِ أتَدْرِي أيُّ آيَةٍ مِن كِتابِ اللهِ معكَ أعْظَمُ؟ قالَ: قُلتُ: {اللَّهُ لا إلَهَ إلَّا هو الحَيُّ القَيُّومُ}، قالَ: فَضَرَبَ في صَدْرِي، وقالَ: واللَّهِ لِيَهْنِكَ العِلْمُ أبا المُنْذِرِ).
