تظهر قصة بلقيس ، كما تُعرف في ديننا الإسلامي بملكة سبأ ، في القرآن ، وإن لم يذكر اسمها ، وقد زينت قصتها من قبل المفسرين المسلمين، وأعطى العرب بلقيس أيضًا سلسلة نسب عربية جنوبية ، وهي موضوع سلسلة واسعة من الأساطير؛ وفقًا للرواية القرآنية فإنه بعد أن سمع سليمان من الهدهد ، أن بلقيس ومملكتها يعبدون الشمس ، أرسلوا رسالة يطلبون منها عبادة الله؛ وردت بإرسال الهدايا ، ولكن عندما أثبت سليمان عدم تقبلها لها ، جاءت إلى قصره بنفسها. جن الملك في هذه الأثناء ، خوفًا من أن يغري الملك بالزواج من بلقيس ، همس له أن لديها أرجل مشعرة وحوافر حمار. ولأن سليمان فضوليًا بشأن هذه الظاهرة الغريبة ، كان لديه أرضية زجاجية مبنية أمام عرشه حتى انخدعت بلقيس لتظن أنه ماء، ورفعت تنانيرها لتتخطاه وكشفت أن ساقيها كانتا مشعرتين حقًا. ثم أمر سليمان الجن بعمل مزيل شعر للملكة

بعدما دخلت ملكة سبأ القصر ذي الأرضية الزجاجية شديدة الشفافية لدرجة ألا يُرى، واعتقدت أنها تمشي على الماء ورفعت طرف ثوبها كي لا يبتلّ فأخبرها سليمان -عليه السلام- دون أن ينظر إلى أن الأرض مصنوعةٌ من الزجاج الشفاف والماء أسفل منها، عندئذٍ أعلنت بلقيس إسلامها وأسلم معها قومها.

وفقًا لقصة بلقيس ملكة سبأ في الحضارة الأثيوبية فإنها عاشت في القرن العاشر قبل الميلاد ، واختلفت المصادر في نسبها وذكر في سفر التكوين بانها بلقيس بنت بلقيس بنت شراحيل بن مالك بن الريان، ملكة سبأ، وتزوجها نبي الله سليمان – عليه السلام.
